P38 Tools
With the help of the P38 fanatics on AULRO I have compiled this list of helpful tools for those who work on the P38
I think of the P38 as the orphaned love child of Rover and BMW, and when you look at the fasteners used on it, you can see why !
- Metric Nuts and Bolts
- UNF/UNC Nuts and Bolts
- Torx Head Bolts, which use e-torx sockets
- Allen Key Socket Head Bolts
- Security Torx Screw, at least one on the MAF
- PosiDriv rather than Philips head screws
The upshot of this is that you need a good selection of spanners, sockets and screwdrivers in all of these systems.
There are a couple of special tools which help greatly but are not totally essential
P38 Special Tools
- Propshaft Removal Tool. DA1119
- Viscous Fan Holder.
The fan holding tool when properly orientated can be bolted to the crankshaft pulley and used to brace it while undoing/replacing the 200ft/lb bolt
It can also be bolted to the drive flanges when undoing/tightening same. A very handy tool indeed! Thanks HOGES from Aulro
- Fan Removal Spanner, Viscous Fan Coupling nut is 36mm.
- Ball joint remover
- Brake Piston clamp, though a G Clamp and some wood works well
- Hose clip removal pliers. Very handy for those factory style clips
